Starting anything new can be a little nerve wracking. The secret, I think, is to jump right in. So here I am, jumping right into substack.
I intend to use this platform to showcase some of my best photos past and present and to explore beauty in nature and our built environment. I believe beauty is everywhere. We don’t need to travel to exotic locations to find it. Beauty surrounds us. We just need to slow down and look with attention and care.
Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. - Confucius
About this image:
I took this picture on Old Hastings Road in Warkworth, Ontario in the summer of 2007. The street had recently been dug up to work on the water supply line leading to a nearby house. The water line repaired, a rough patch of paving had been temporarily laid over the scar of ground left behind.
A line painter had come along and improvised a crooked line over the recent repair.
As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to stop and take a picture. There is beauty in things which stand outside expected norms. I was immediately attracted to the bright orange-yellow against the many shades of grey of the pavement. On closer inspection, we see the line is quite imperfect even in the straight parts, having been sprayed from above onto the rough pebbly surface of the roadway.
I added a bit of painterly post processing to accentuate the roughness of the road surface and the myriad of colours reflected from it.
Until next time.

Molten and sinuous - I love it! Takes a keen eye to notice, stop and document and I'm glad you've done so.
Very cool John. Love it.
