While I was in Montreal, we got to talking about concerts we have seen over the years. It occured to me that I haven’t been to a concert in years. So when I saw that Goddo was going to be playing the Empire Theatre in Belleville that Friday, I didn’t hesitate to book one of the remaining seats. Middle front row balcony, so I figured I’d have a pretty good view and I was right. It was the 50th Anniversary of the band who formed in Scarborough, Ontario in 1975, the year before I arrived in town.
Two for the Show
Warming up the audience were Two for the Show (Trooper reference), who won the audience over with their great sense of humour and a bunch of Canadian covers from the likes of April Wine, Teenage Head, and Barenaked Ladies. Good fun.
The Main Concert
Founder and singer/bassist Greg Godovitz was accompanied by original drummer Marty Morin. Supplementing these were musicians who have worked with or been a part of the band over the years.
The concert started with an audiovisual tribute to Doug Inglis (1951-2021) accompanied by Anacanapanacan, the Overture from their 1979 album An Act of Goddo and featured in the video above. This music was co-written with George Atwell and features 15 members of the Florida Symphony Orchestra. Greg says of the track, “we double tracked them to make it sound bigger.” He also notes the video was animated by Artist Tim Mohan who has animated much of Greg’s music. As the track ended, the band launched into their louder than life live set with So Walk On from the same album.
Rounding out the band were guitarists Steve Jensen and Steve MacPherson, keyboard player Drew Winters and Gene Hardy on Sax. They were in top form throughout the night and put on an amazing show. Here’s a few shots I got of them as they played.
That’s it for this installment of My Photo Journal. This seems like a good place to drop the entire Who Cares album. Cock On!
You have captured the band members beautifully John - energy and action all there - nicely done! Sounds like it was a great show.
Great photos! Really good work. Looks like a great night.
